Shūnya (AKA Bal Singh) is an electronic producer and classically trained composer based in Melbourne, Australia. He is an artist that is seamlessly weaving together his internal dichotomy of beat nerd and trained Indian classical musician to stirring effect.
Born into a musical family, it was Singh’s father - a professional tabla player and percussionist - that initiated his love for music, first through a steady stream of Indian classical records then, later, by putting his hands onto the tabla. Singh eventually travelled to Malaysia and India to study the more esoteric aspects of Indian classical music, studying the sitar with internationally renowned musician Samuel Dass and then, after being awarded a fellowship by the Australian Arts Council, working with India’s top sarangi player and living legend, Ustad Sabri Khan.
While being drenched in this ancient musical tradition, he has continued an obsession with electronic and experimental music, drawing upon a range of diverse influences including Talvin Singh, Flying Lotus and Sigur Ros. After relocating to Melbourne from Perth upon completing his studies, Singh began to focus on his own composition and production, leading to the incarnation of a neoteric and deeply individual sound.
On his debut EP, 0, Shūnya has collaborated with a highly diverse range of musicians, including renowned Melbourne/L.A. MC Elf Transporter, Indian Bansuri-player Vinod Prasanna and vocalists Aarti Jadu, Nisha and Holly Megan.
The word Shūnya is the philosophical concept of the non-duality between infinite and finite. It is represented by the circle "O" and it reflects his personal and artistic philosophy of anon-duality in genre and style that has been discovered through a very unique musical path that reconciles with but simultaneously celebrates diversity.
