Tooms is Melbourne producer Sam Gill’s late-night, can’t-sleep project, a way to ward off the day’s demons and usher in a new morning.
In one-take sessions over the last two years, Gill experimented with the construction and disintegration of loops. The immediacy of this improvised process strains against the circular repetition of the samples, and creates a sonic tension that never quite lets up.
Simple Tactics, the latest Tooms release, filters the blown-out fuzzy bliss of Slowdive through the electronic expressionism of Actress, and places it in the evocative ambience of Boards of Canada. Disembodied vocals float over the mix, angelic and indecipherable, while beats drop in and out, grounding the atmospheric textures with a steady pulse. Growing from minimalism to dense unruliness and then back again, the tracks pass by the listener like a lonely train in the night.
Tooms is the sound of sleepless anxiety soothed by digital decay—mood music for the 21st century.
